Treptower Park
Berlin, Germany, 12435
Nestled along the River Spree, Treptower Park is a popular 208-acre (84-hectare) green space in the urban jungle of Berlin, beloved for its vast lawns and river access. Locals flock here during summer for a respite from big-city life, but most travelers know the park as the site of the large Soviet War Memorial.
The Basics
Berlin’s second-largest green space, Treptower Park is a place locals and tourists can go to relax without leaving the city center. Here visitors can sunbathe on the lawns, jog along the river, grab a drink at the Zenner beer garden, or explore the Spree by canoe, kayak, or pedal boat. Many boat and bike tours of Berlin pass through Treptower Park, particularly to visit the Soviet War Memorial.
Things to Know Before You Go
Treptower Park covers a lot of ground, so wear good walking shoes and bring water.
The Soviet War Memorial also serves as a cemetery for thousands of Soviet soldiers, and visitors maintain a respectful silence here.
The paved portions of Treptower Park are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
How to Get There
Treptower Park is located in the Alt-Treptau neighborhood of Berlin, just south of the city center. By public transit, take the S-bahn to Treptower Park or take city bus 165, 166, 265, or N65 to Rethelstrasse, Herkomerstrasse, or Sowjetisches Ehrenmal.
When to Get There
Treptower Park is open all year round. During the summer months, the park gets quite crowded with sunbathers and barbecuers, so arrive early to grab a spot in the shade or along the river.
A Park to Remember the Past
Treptower Park is not only a beautiful green space for relaxation, it is also a place for remembrance. The large Soviet War Memorial in the middle of the park is a reminder of the 80,000 Red Army soldiers who died trying to recapture Berlin from the Nazis during World War II. In the River Spree near Treptower Park, the sculpture Molecule Man, by American artist Jonathan Borofsky, represents the reunification of the neighborhoods that had been separated by the Berlin Wall.
