U Street Corridor
Washington DC, Washington DC, USA
One of Washington DC’s most important hubs of African American culture and community from the 1920s to the '60s, the U Street Corridor today offers a vibrant range of restaurants, jazz clubs, shops, and other attractions. The former home of Duke Ellington, and once known as “Black Broadway,” the area is a listed Historic District.
The basics
If you’re after a freewheeling, cultural day out in DC, make the U Street Corridor your first stop. The dynamic neighborhood is home to a wide range of sights, including historical landmarks, such as the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum; destination-worthy restaurants, like Ben’s Chili Bowl and Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant; and world-class performance venues, such as the 9:30 Club and Howard Theatre. Additional bars, shops, and eateries offer further incentives to stick around and explore.
There are a number of tour options for visiting the U Street Corridor, from street-art walking tours and food itineraries to Black history–themed excursions.
Things to know before you go
Keep your eyes peeled—the U Street Corridor is celebrated for its murals, including one featuring Barack and Michelle Obama on the side of Ben’s Chili Bowl.
It's only a short stroll to Malcolm X Park (also known as Meridian Hill Park), famed for its cascading fountain.
Head to Ben’s Chili Bowl to try one of DC’s most iconic dishes: the chili half-smoke, or a spicy hot dog–style sausage covered with mustard, onions, and chili sauce.
Held on Saturdays from May to November, the 14th & U Farmers Market is a great place to pick up produce and locally crafted foods.
How to get there
If using public transportation, take the Metrorail Green or Yellow lines to U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Station. The area is also served by a number of bus lines, including the #52, #54, #59, #90, #92, #96, and X3. It can also be reached by Capital Bikeshare or taxi.
When to get there
The U Street Corridor is a destination from morning until the wee hours. During the day, visit its museums, restaurants, and shops; after dark, check out its bars and music venues, where you can catch jazz and indie shows and DJ sets.
Best U Street performance venues
Once frequented by Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong, U Street is still home to a vast array of performance venues. The historical Howard Theatre is a destination for jazz and gospel brunches, while the Lincoln Theatre hosts musicians, comedians, and other performers. The 9:30 Club is considered the city’s top contemporary music venue, while smaller clubs like the U Street Music Hall and Black Cat provide a more intimate experience.
