USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center
New York City, NY
Best known as the home of the US Open Tennis Championships, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is among the largest tennis centers in the world. Located in Queens, New York City, the US Open is the stadium complex’s main draw, but it attracts tennis fans throughout the year with bookable courts, tennis camps for kids, and stadium tours.
The basics
The center's main stadium is the massive Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis-specific stadium in the world, and can seat over 23,000 people. You can see the stadium for yourself by attending an event or by signing up for a center-run tour (held on select Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays). Tours last between 60 and 90 minutes and visit the Arthur Ashe, Louis Armstrong, and Grandstand Stadiums, along with locker rooms and the interview room.
Things to know before you go
The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is a must-see for tennis fans. The center is wheelchair accessible, with designated seating at all stadiums, but parking options are limited. There are loads of drinking and dining options at the center, though some are only open during the US Open. Large bags, larger electronics (including tablets and laptops), flags, signs, and glass containers are not allowed inside the center during the US Open.
How to get there
The easiest and most cost-effective way to get to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center from Manhattan is by taking the 7 train on the New York City Subway to the Mets–Willets Point station, about a 10-minute walk from the center. Alternatively, bus and Long Island Rail Road services are available, as are taxis and rideshares.
When to get there
The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is a year-round attraction, but many people opt to visit during the US Open, which runs from the last Monday in August until early September. However, tours of the center don’t take place during the US Open or the weeks leading up to it, so if you want to take a tour, you’ll need to plan your trip for another time of year.
What is the US Open?
Officially known as the US Open Tennis Championships, the US Open is the final of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, championship matches where lucky guests can see the world’s top tennis players on the courts—the other three are the French Open (Roland-Garros), the Australian Open, and Wimbledon. The tournament, which has been held annually since 1891, features championship singles and doubles matches for men, women, and mixed groups.
