Van Cortlandt Park
New York City, NY
Van Cortlandt Park is New York City’s third-largest park. Located in the northwest Bronx, its thickly forested interior valleys and ridges are flanked by sports fields, a pool, playgrounds, and other recreational facilities. Containing some of New York City’s last remaining native woodlands and wetlands, it’s an ideal place to hike and get outdoors without going too far from the city.
The basics
Van Cortlandt Park’s native forest provides a habitat for rare birds, animals, and once-abundant wildflowers, as large areas are protected from development or construction. More than 20 miles (32 kilometers) of hiking trails, plus sports facilities including cycle paths and tennis courts, offer something for almost anyone seeking respite in nature. Travelers typically visit independently on a day trip from other parts of New York City.
Things to know before you go
- Pack a picnic as only a couple of food vendors serve the park.
- You’ll need a permit to use the team sports fields and the tennis courts, but some other sports facilities don’t require one.
- Anyone aged over 16 needs a fishing license to fish in Van Cortlandt Lake, and you must catch and release any fish.
- History enthusiasts shouldn’t miss visiting the mid-18th-century Van Cortlandt House Museum, containing furniture and decorative arts.
How to get there
A few major Bronx arterial roads pass through the park, so having your own car is an easy way of getting there. Some free and paid parking is available. You can also reach the park’s southern edge by subway: Take the 4 train to Woodlawn or the 1 train to Van Cortlandt Park–242 Street. These stations are about an hour’s ride from central Manhattan.
When to get there
The park is open from early morning until late evening. Depending on what you want to do, the park is a year-round attraction, but some activities would be uncomfortable during the cold winters. The outdoor pool is open between June and September, from late morning until mid-evening. The Van Cortlandt House Museum is open Wednesday–Sunday from late morning until late afternoon.
Visit the New York Botanical Garden
Just south of Van Cortlandt Park is another of the Bronx’s major attractions: the New York Botanical Garden. You can visit both on a day trip or stay in the Bronx or Upper Manhattan for easy access. Described as a museum of plants, the Botanic Garden has outdoor and indoor areas, including an elegant late-19th-century glass conservatory that’s ideal for winter visits.
