Walnut Street Bridge
Chattanooga, TN
One of Chattanooga’s most striking landmarks, the Walnut Street Bridge stretches across the Tennessee River. Easily accessible by foot, this pedestrian bridge connects downtown Chattanooga with the North Shore. Offering sweeping views of the riverfront, Walnut Street Bridge is a favorite city destination for locals and visitors looking for a place to go jogging, ride a bike, or take photographs.
The basics
Topping the list of beloved public places in Chattanooga, Walnut Street Bridge is about a half-mile (0.8 kilometers) long and open to the public. Most visitors spend an hour or two strolling across the historic wrought-iron and steel truss bridge (just be sure to keep an eye out for cyclists). Some people bring picnics to enjoy during a stroll over the bridge. You can explore Chattanooga’s North Shore neighborhood after crossing the bridge, or turn back around at any point and head back downtown.
Things to know before you go
- Outdoor enthusiasts seeking a place to jog are often drawn here.
- The bridge is exposed to the elements, so be sure to wear sunscreen and bring water on hot days.
- The Walnut Street Bridge is completely ADA-compliant.
How to get there
Most visitors arrive on foot from downtown Chattanooga and the Tennessee Riverwalk. The entrance to the Walnut Street Bridge is found near the Hunter Museum of American Art. If using public transit, the closest bus stop is at Market and West Aquarium Way. You can find parking at Coolidge Park on the North Shore or Ross’s Landing on the downtown side—but expect a 10-minute walk from there to the bridge.
When to get there
The Walnut Street Bridge is open 24 hours a day throughout the year. Sunset is an especially beautiful time of day to walk across the bridge. It can become crowded on weekends when the weather is nice; visit first thing in the morning or at dusk to avoid the crowds.
