World Erotic Art Museum (WEAM)
1205 Washington Ave., Miami Beach, FL, 33139
In Miami’s Art Deco District, the Wilzig Erotic Art Museum, also known as the World Erotic Art Museum (WEAM), was founded in 2005 and is the only museum of its kind in the United States—exclusively filled with erotic art. The collection includes over 4,000 works of international art, dating back as far as 300 BC. The 12,000-square-foot (1,115-square-meter) museum was founded by Naomi Wilzig, an American art collector and writer.
The basics
At WEAM, visitors are able to gain a better understanding of the history of sex and sexuality through artifacts and pieces from noted artists, including Rembrandt, Rodin, Picasso, and Dalí. Modern pieces include everything from countless sex toys in various shapes to dominatrix Barbie dolls. In addition to temporary exhibitions, the museum houses permanent displays that span the globe, such as “African Treasures,” which explores the continent’s traditions of artwork devoted to fertility and the human form.
Things to know before you go
You need to be 18 years of age or older to be admitted into the museum.
Access to the museum is on the second floor, and is accessible via an elevator in the lobby.
WEAM’s educational programming includes a combination of academic events with guest speakers and panel discussions, cultural programs such as film screenings, and a variety of workshops and classes.
No photography or video is allowed.
How to get there
The Wilzig Building is a museum complex with entrances on Washington Avenue and 12th Street in Miami Beach; WEAM is on the second floor, accessible by elevator. By bus, take the South Beach Loop or routes 120 and 150, which stop near the museum on Washington Avenue.
When to get there
WEAM is open daily, except for major holidays, with last entry one hour before closing. For many, the most comfortable time to visit Miami is in the spring (March through May) before the summer humidity hits. And come December, Miami Art Week welcomes a slew of international art fairs, including Art Basel, which attract artists and art lovers to the city.
The Miami art scene
Thanks in part to its role as the host city for Art Basel, Miami has become a must-visit for its art and architecture. From the symmetrical buildings found in the Art Deco District to the vibrant street art and murals at Wynwood Walls to the Institute of Contemporary Art in the Design District, the city boasts plenty of spots to see and buy works of art.
