Worth Avenue
West Palm Beach, FL
After what’s now known as the Everglades Club drew ritzy crowds in the early 1900s, the Worth Avenue Association was formed by local merchants in 1938. Wealthy individuals ranging from Lilly Pulitzer to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor either opened up shops or purchased real estate, which grew Worth Avenue into one of the most renowned and exclusive shopping districts in the country.
The basics
Worth Avenue’s high-end reputation is in its name, but that shouldn’t keep visitors of any budget from stopping by. Whether you’re window-shopping and soaking in the scene, or you’re in the market for fine jewelry, artwork, and clothing, there’s a lot to admire here. For a casual visit, grab a coffee from one of the cafés and stroll along the sidewalk from the Lake Worth Lagoon to the beachline to appreciate two beautiful waterfront settings on fabulous Palm Beach.
Things to know before you go
- Historical walking tours take place monthly during the cooler months.
- The beach off of Worth Avenue is open to the public.
- Only three hotels are within walking distance of Worth Avenue.
How to get there
Worth Avenue is on the island of Palm Beach. There are two general ways to get there: either from the southern barrier islands via A1A or from the mainland. Most visitors will drive across Royal Park Bridge then drive 5 blocks south to Worth Avenue. You can also take bus route 41 onto the island, then walk to Worth Avenue in 10 minutes.
When to get there
Worth Avenue is a public street that’s open day and night, though the hours vary for all of the restaurants and shops here. It’s best to arrive between 10am and 7pm when most businesses, including the Palm Beach Mall, are open.
Explore Clematis Street by night
If Worth Avenue is ideal for daytime fun, then Clematis Street is its moonlight companion. Located in West Palm Beach, just across the Lake Worth Lagoon via the Flagler Memorial Bridge, Clematis Street isn’t as pricey as Worth. Plenty of nightclubs, restaurants, and bars are a big draw here, so it’s great for a night out.
