Erick Welcome Center to Clinton
61.4 miles: 1 hours, 31 minutes
I-40 replaced the fabled Mother Road decades ago in this part of Oklahoma, but no area recalls its heritage more enthusiastically, with not one, but two museums filled with Route 66 memorabilia, one in Elk City and one in Clinton. Another museum honors native son Roger Miller, known for “King of the Road,” his 1964 hit celebrating the vagabond life.
Clinton to Oklahoma City
96.9 miles: 2 hours, 14 minutes
From Clinton the route makes a beeline east to Oklahoma City past wind turbines and vast, irrigated fields. In OKC, a segment of historic Route 66 passes two iconic, mid-century landmarks: the futuristic Gold Dome of Citizens State Bank at 1112 N.W. 23rd St., and a giant milk bottle atop a little wedge of a building one block north.
